I am still looking to find anyone who knew my Dad; BSM 3 Tom Cooper.  He served in the first Division and I know that he was on the 1964-65 cruise.  I also have a certificate from being at the North Pole aboard the USS Little Rock on September 29, 1965.  If anyone has any information, knew my Dad, or could put an interesting story with this certificate I would be truly honored to hear it.  Thank you all so much! God bless you all!

David,

Thanks for the posting regarding your dad's time on the Little Rock. You comment about the certificate helps put a date to the Arctic Circle crossing made be the ship in the Fall of 1965. I had been unable to pinpoint an exact date. I've now added a date to the event (click here for a link to the web page. Go to the bottom of the web page).

The certificate might have some additional data which we would like to have. It would be written in and would indicate that the ship crossed the Arctic Circle at a specific longitude. If this info is on the certificate, could you kindly let us know what it is.

Also, don't confuse crossing the Arctic Circle (which is about latitude 66° 34') with going to the North Pole. As much as the crew would have enjoyed going to the North Pole, it is inaccessible by surface ships. The polar ice cap keeps all ships except submarines from reaching the pole. The North Pole is still another 1600 miles +/- north of the Arctic Circle.

Hopefully you'll get some response from shipmates that knew your Dad.

PS: I haven't forgotten that I was going to send you a CD. I had a major computer crash and it has set me back some. I'll try to gt it out next week.

Best Regards,

As soon as I get the certificate back from the printer who is making a copy for me, I will see if I can get that information for you.

Mr. Tilley,

I have the coordinates from the certificate that you wanted.  The certificate reads:

The 29th day of September 1965 at Longitude 02  50' (I believe W).

I hope this helps.

I am having copies made of this document at a local graphics company as the original is not in the best shape, I would be honored to donate one to your association for display on behalf of my Dad.  I will even have it prof. matted and framed for the Ships Association.

Best wishes and God Bless!

David Cooper
