I’m sure the Christmas-tree antenna at the pointy end of the ship had a purpose other than to secure the Med Lights.  We probably need a good RM to fill in the details.

John,

After a little research I've come to the (hopefully correct) conclusion that the antenna so proudly displayed on the bow of the USS Little Rock is a "discone antenna".

From Wikipedia I found that a discone antenna is a version of a biconical antenna, omnidirectional, vertically polarized and that it exhibits unity gain. Further, it is exceptionally wideband with a radiation pattern in the horizontal plane.

Further, we really DO need an RM to explain what all this means!!

At the recent reunion in Buffalo I was given a large detailed schematic of the USS Little Rock (CLG-4 configuration) by Jim Embrey. Jim had obtained this now declassified drawing from the National Archives in Washington DC. (Jim reports he paid $7.00 for the copy!).

The drawing labels the device under discussion as:

XMTG ANT
2-2 & 2-3
6-30 MC
DISCONE CAGE

I assume this means that this device is actually two transmitting antennas (2-2 and 2-3), and they transmit in the 6 to 30 megacycle range. Further it would seem that the structure is in fact a "cage" supporting the two antennae.

Maybe a Radioman will step forward and elaborate on this.
