I was sorting through my old papers and found a reference to TWA Flight 841. The New York bound passenger jet was en route from Athens to Rome when it crashed into the Ionian Sea near the island of Kefallinia (Cephallonia), Greece, September 8, 1974. The flight's first segment was from Ben Gurion International Airport, Tel Aviv to Athens. Little Rock’s communication group and Sixth Fleet Staff provided operational assistance as USS Independence (CVA 62) and USS Biddle (DLG 34) conducted search and rescue operations. Responding at flank speed to the disaster, Biddle arrived at the crash area at 2030 local time. Biddle’s boat crews, with the assistance of helicopters from Independence, recovered 12 bodies during the night. There were no survivors from the 79 passengers and nine crew members on flight 841.
The National Transportation Board later attributed the crash to a Palestinian terrorist bomb.
