HELLO EVERYONE,
FIRST OF ALL THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY. I FOUND YOUR ASSOCIATION BECAUSE I AM TRYING TO RESEARCH AN OIL PAINTING I OWN BY THE ARTIST SAPORETTI OF THE USS LITTLE ROCK.
DOES ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS ARTIST AND THE PAINTING?
THANK YOU FOR ANY INFORMATION YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO PROVIDE!

Virginia,
Thanks for contacting us. It is always nice to know that our website is being viewed by folks outside of our Association.
I have attached to this reply a rather poor quality photo which shows a painting by "Saporetti", who I believe resided in Naples Italy. Can you tell if your painting similar to the picture shown?
It is my understanding that Mr. Saporetti would paint custom versions of this image and sell them to those interested in having an original oil painting of the USS Little Rock. I have no idea as to how many he painted of this particular image, or if he had additional images of the Little Rock as well.
The USS Little Rock Association is in possession of two similar, but still different, versions of this particular painting. One is currently displayed in the wardroom of the USS Little Rock (now a museum in Buffalo, NY, and the other is in our archives.
When convenient, please get back to me and let me now if you have a version of the picture mentioned above, or another a different one.
Thanks in advance!

Hi Artillery!
Thanks for the information. The version I have shows the ship alone at sea underway and shows the view looking at the starboard side. It is encased in a nice gold wooden frame and has a linen liner and then another small white liner. The framed size is 27"high x 34"wide. The sight size is about 20"highx27"wide. It is signed in the lower left side Saporetti.
In doing some research I noticed that the U.S. Navy Art Museum has at least three of his oil paintings but not one of the Little Rock.
Saporetti seems to be (or have been) a very talented artist. Did he live in Italy near where the fleet was based?
Kind regards,
Virginia |

Artillery,
Sorry, I meant it is signed on the lower right side of the painting.

I received a note and photo from shipmate Art Siehl (67 - 69) regarding the Saporetti painting referred to by Virginia in the original post on this thread. Here is an abbreviated version of Art Siehl's note.....
"Happy Holidays Art (Tilley),
I was going thru various websites and saw a message about a painting by Saporetti. I think I may have a photo of the original.... back in '68, there was a dedication on Thanksgiving Day by Captain Bennett. He presented the painting to someone connected to the Gaeta government, but I'm not sure who or exactly why. (See photo below.)
'Virginia' describes her painting as being 27" x 34" (and) also says her painting shows it at sea from the starboard side. (The attached photo shows the USS Little Rock a viewed from the port side.) ...the officer in the photo with Captain Bennett is Ensign Beatty, the Ships Sales Officer."
To help further the discussion on the painting that 'Virginia" has, I will try to contact her by email and see if she can elaborate further.
