I, too, saw that entry under "Taps" in the USNCSA journal.  This was the first we had heard of Shep's passing.

One day, while we were sitting in the lobby of the Adam's Mark Hotel, at a Buffalo reunion a few years ago, Shep told me that of all the duty stations and ships on which he'd served in all his years in the Navy, the Little Rock was "the best of all."

I asked him why this was so and he replied, "The men.  It was the finest crew he had ever encountered."

We will miss him, resplendent in his whites, at our annual get-togethers.

It would appear that there was no formal obituary published for shipmate CDR John "Shep" R. Sheppard. In lieu of an obituary we will use this Message Board and the Association website "Recently Deceased Shipmates" page to list comments and remembrances from shipmates and friends.

A great place to read about Cdr. Sheppard's Navy experiences is on his Oral History page.

Following are some thoughts about "Shep" received from friends and shipmates. Feel free to add your's by clicking on the "Reply" tab.

•    "..... I am greatly upset.  John was one of my most important mentors in the Wardroom when I came aboard as an Ensign.  While he portrayed a rather gruff exterior, the man  was a huge teddy bear for sure.  I loved him."
Jerry Dupuis

•    "This is a loss to us all……….he was a fine officer and a fine gentleman!"
Steve Chase

•     "We lost a great shipmate."
Woody Donaldson

•     "John Sheppard, better know as "Shep" was a CO-Founder of the Little Rock Assn and provided valuable leadership during our early years.  ......It's sad to hear about the loss of "Shep". Many don't realize the role he played in forming our organization back in 1991. He provided much guidance during the first year or two and didn't complain about the extensive travel from California. H of course is one of the four founders of the Little Rock Assn."
Don Schuld

•     "And could John tell a story.  A raconteur in the finest sense of the word."
Bill Stankiewicz
