Desperately seeking for pictures/images about the visit of USS Little Rock visiting Amsterdam in 1964. I was on board then when I was 10 years old, watching the show on the rear deck with the TALOS missiles. Now, I am 58, and planned to visit Buffalo's Naval Park in Oct. 2012 with my son. It will be my ultimate trip to the USA for the first time in my life and glad to visit "The Rock" after 48 years. Still owns a flyer from the visit in Amsterdam, but unfortunately no pictures. Who will be so kind to send me pictures from this visit in 1964 when the USS Little Rock barked at "Stony Head Pier" in Amsterdam and was the flag-ship in 1964 during an exercise in the Northern Atlantic and North Sea. I would be very surprised. Regards from Joop, PA3JD (Ham radio on http://www.qrz.com)
Excuse me for my bad English language. I am Dutch, sri.But I do hope on a reply from you.pa3jd@veron.nl Wish you all the best and 73.

I was on board for that memorable trip to Amsterdam, but I don't know of any pictures that were in the cruise book or otherwise that have recoded that visit. My cruise book has been severely damaged by water, so it's difficult to open the pages, but I don't see much on the trip to Amsterdam in what I can open. __________________ Paul Jett FTG3, 1962-1965

Joop,
After the Little Rock's 1964 Northern European Tour, which was primarily a training cruise for Officer Candidates, a Cruise Book was produced which provided, among other things, photos of each of the port visits.
I have attached one of the pictures which shows the ship passing through a channel on the way into Amsterdam. It is the only picture that really is specific to the location. All of the other Cruise Book pictures of Holland, I am sorry to say, are rather "generic". Perhaps some of the readers of this Bulletin Board will have some personal photos that they can share.
As far as your trip to the USA is concerned, especially with regards to your visit to Buffalo, please keep us informed as to your schedule. Several of us live close enough to Buffalo to be able to meet up with you and your family and perhaps give you a guided tour.
Thanks for you for sharing your memories of the USS Little Rock. ------------ Joop,
(I hope the above translation is close. Compliments of Google)

Art,
I thought I saw another one that had a bus in the background with someone coming up the officer's gangplank. There really wasn't much to see in it, but it did show a few civilians on the dock.

Paul & Joop,
I believe this is the picture (see below) that you were referring to. The text adjacent to the pic would indicate it is indeed Amsterdam, but it could be anywhere I suppose.
The "LANTMIDTRARON '64" Midshipman Cruise book contains some significant errors with regards to where the USS Little Rock was on any particular date. For instance it implies that on the 4th of July the we were in Sandefjord, Norway and Plymouth, England.
I'm sure that some of the errors come as a result of there being multiple ships which were not always at the same port on a given date. And then trying to come up with a Cruise Book that is "generic" for all the ships that were involved.
If anyone out there has a "log" of where the ship was on a day-by-day basis, it would be appreciated if you'd share that info with us. Otherwise I will put this on my bucket-list of things to look up next time I am at the Naval Historical Center.

Art, that was the picture I was thinking of.
I don't have any sort of log, just a failing memory to depend on. However, I believe we were in Portsmouth on the 4th of July. It seems like we went to Cherbourg first, then to Portsmouth and finally to Amsterdam.

I've been accumulating a LOT of USS Little Rock photos that need to be uploaded to the website. It's getting done slowly.
But in the meantime, here is a picture taken by Robert Ernst LT(jg), OPS Division 1962-1965 of the Little Rock's approach into Amsterdam, Holland in July 1964.

After 48 years I plan to see the "Rock" again. My history: when I was 10 years old in 1964, I stayed at a primary school in Amsterdam - The Netherlands, left the school for one and a half day to visit the "Rock" and later on was punished for that. All my life I was interested in what became of the "Rock".
Now, in Oct 2012, we, my son and I, are planned to visit the "Rock" in Oct. 2012.
I do still have a flyer of the 60's when USS Little Rock visited Amsterdam and was barked at "Stony Head' in the western part of the Amsterdam-harbour together with 2 other warships. I will be at the Naval Park on Wednesday Oct. 24, 2012. Hope to have a wonderful day after 48 years, and watch the famous TALOS missiles and, of course, the radio-room, in which, as a ham-radio PA3JD, I will be very much interested. Best regards to all of you, crew members of USS Little Rock.
Please, excuse mistakes in my English language. But I do hope you'll understand.
Regards,
Joop, PA3JD Dedemsvaart (Province of Overijssel) The Netherlands

Dear Joop:
First of all, your English is perfect. There is no need to apologize. We are very happy to see you (once again) aboard Little Rock - this time in a cyber sort of way.
Secondly, all the Little Rock crew members welcome you to our website and, due to your attachment to the ship, consider you as part of the "family."
Please, just before your trip to Buffalo in October, kindly let us know the date of your planned visit to the ship. We will make sure that you do not have to pay an admission fee to enter the Naval Park there.
With good wishes from this side of "the pond."

Dear crew members,
Thanks for all your answers and information concerning "the Rock" and about the visit of USS Little Rock in Amsterdam. This week I found on Dutch websites "Little Rock" was visiting Amsterdam on Sept. 23, 1965. Now I am mailing with the Amsterdam-newspaper "The Telegraph", whether they have images of the visit at the quay of "Stony Head".
We are delighted with your very friendly replies. That means a lot to us. Looking forward to Wednesday, Oct 24, 2012.
Thanks very, very much to all of you.
On behalf of my son Walter,
Joop van der Does Dedemsvaart Holland
