Little Rock had a football team in 1974 -- named the Little Rock Tigers. I went to a game the team played in Naples on Sunday, October 27, 1974. The Tigers won easily, scoring five touchdowns. The final score was Little Rock 38 and the Capo Flyers 8. Are there any former players out there? Prior to the big football weekend, the Little Rock went out to fire a couple of missiles into the sky. The ship pulled out from Gaeta on Tuesday, October 22 and returned that Friday. It was a wasted effort as a little bit of everything went wrong. I was disappointed that the missile launch was canceled, as it was always a rush to watch a missile zigzag through the sky. |

John,
Thanks for another interesting bit of information. You are a one-man history book. It will be interesting to see if there are any members who were on the Tiger team.
I'm also curious as to what other teams we had on the Little Rock. I'd be willing to generate a web page that links to each team, and perhaps lists the names of the players / participants.
Let's see what comes out of the readership.
Thanks,
PS. The missile didn't "zig zag"...... they went straight as an arrow to the target. (Well, more or less.) __________________ Art Tilley MT2 (Editor)

I also was at that game watching my husband, Jack Drahota #32 (fullback) and his best friend, Norm Hicks #50 (center) play football for the Little Rock Tigers!
I remember their playing field in Naples very well; it was in the crater of an extinct volcano. How many people can claim that they played football in the crater of a volcano? They tell their "football stories" often and Jack & Norm have been best friends since their Gaeta days.
Sincerely, Valerie Drahota __________________ JACK DRAHOTA |

I remember that football game and all the others we played in Naples. Jack Drahota and Norm Hicks were, and probably still are, a couple of very good football players. Does anybody remember the Turkey Bowl in the mud at the Gaeta soccer field? It was so sloppy we had to wash the mud off the footballs in a bucket of water.
My name is Paul Hadel, I was the coach for the first 2 seasons. My wife Bev and I look back on those days with great joy. All the bus rides to Naples, the many pit stops on the way back. Thanks for bringing it all back. |

| Who could forget our fleet-footed quarterback? I still have the pics we made for the Little Rock paper. We all looked a bit younger then. Coach |

Gentlemen,
I'd really like to do a website "spread" about the various sports teams the USS Little Rock had over the years. Those of you with photos or copies of newpaper articles could help make that happen.
If you have something that you might feel helpful in memorializing the teams of the "Rock" please drop me an email and let me know what you have.
Thanks in advance.
